What do you do when you find that your freezer is cold, but your refrigerator is not cooling? The good news: this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to buy a new appliance. The bad news: you may need to do a little troubleshooting to get things back on track.
Here are some tips for troubleshooting before you bring in the pros!
Is your refrigerator too full?
Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to overfill your refrigerator. Exceeding capacity could block vents that allow cold air to flow from the freezer to the refrigerator. Try to leave at least one inch between refrigerator walls and food. It helps to leave a little bit of space between each item so that air can circulate between your food items and containers. A general rule is to only fill three-quarters of your refrigerator to allow air to circulate.
Dirty Coils
Have you ever pulled your refrigerator out to clean behind it? If so, you have probably discovered a wealth of dust and dirt. This debris scattered around the coils of your machine can prevent your refrigerator from cooling properly. To clean your coils effectively, you first need to unplug the cord from the wall. Next, use a small vacuum attachment to run it back and forth over the vents to remove the dust. You’ll want to clean your coils every 6–12 months to keep your refrigerator cooling properly.
